I relied on a drink at the end of the day to take the edge off.
Stressed? ✔ 🍷
Overwhelmed? ✔ 🍷
Tired? ✔ 🍷
Bored? ✔ 🍷
Constant, frenetic brain chatter? ✔ 🍷
But wine wasn’t helping me solve any of that. Instead, it was leaving me fatigued, headachey, grumpy, impatient, anxious and regretful. Super fun, right? And as my kids got older, I started to question what I was role-modeling for them.
I was ready to make a change. I thought it would be a piece of cake.
Fast forward several years, and I was trapped in a loop of making a promise to myself to drink less or not at all, having some success, but then backsliding or picking up a different habit, and eventually ending up back to where I started. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
I felt stuck.
None of the mainstream solutions appealed to me. Labeling myself an alcoholic and telling myself I was powerless didn’t feel true. I knew what I had was a habit and not a disease. I had no desire to work things out in front of a group of strangers.
I just needed to get some lasting traction.
Eventually, I figured out two important things:
Will power alone will never get the job done.
I was focusing on the problems alcohol was causing me, but overlooking the problems it was solving for me.
Finally, I was able to make the changes I had started to think would be impossible.
I lost my desire to drink.
I no longer needed alcohol to unwind at the end of the day.
I didn’t require it anymore when I was celebrating, or happy, or out with friends.
I stopped worrying about the impact my drinking might have on my kids.
The drinking mind chatter started to fade.
I felt free.
If it’s possible for me, it’s possible for you.
